Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

What Is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy ?
The pelvic floor muscles are at the base of the pelvis and attach from your pubic bone to the tailbone (front to back) and sit bones (side to side). They act as a sling and provide support for the pelvic organs (including the bladder, uterus, and rectum), stabilize your low back and pelvis, and help to close the openings where urine and stool come out. These muscles also impact circulation and sexual function.
Some conditions related to pelvic health dysfunction include:
-
- Unresolved low back/SIJ/pubic symphysis pain
- Coccydynia (tailbone pain)
- Diastasis (abdominal separation)
- Painful sex (dyspareunia)
- Pre- and post- natal women
- Pelvic organ prolapse (POP)
- Incontinence (urinary or fecal leakage)
- Constipation
- Pelvic pain (vaginismus, interstitial cystitis, endometriosis)
- Men who are experiencing chronic pelvic pain or incontinence post prostatectomy
- Unexplained hip pain
Physiotherapy can help!!!
A physiotherapist specifically trained in the area of pelvic health will be able to assess and treat the group of muscles involved with your urinary, bowel, sexual function, and core stability.
During the initial assessment, there will be a detailed history taking, an external exam, and if indicated, an internal examination. The external exam will consist of assessment of postural alignment, strength, breathing patterns, and how much movement you have in your low back, hips, and pelvis. Analyzing your breathing pattern and breath awareness is important because the diaphragm, core, and pelvic floor work together. Many people breathe incorrectly and may hold their breath, which profoundly affects the function of the pelvic floor.
Internal examination is completed vaginally and/or rectally. The internal exam provides information on the strength of your pelvic floor muscles, assesses for tenderness and muscle tone, and determines how the pelvic floor is functioning. The goal of the session is to evaluate symptoms based on personal boundaries and to NOT create a painful response.
Based on assessment findings, each patient will be given a personalized treatment plan which may include education, exercises, manual therapy, activity modification, and relaxation practices.
