Clinical Pilates

Clinical pilates is a system of exercises that focuses on mobility and strength with mindful controlled movements.

What is

Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates combine the manual therapy skills of a physiotherapist with a system of exercises developed to assist in injury rehabilitation. Emphasis is placed on core strength, posture, movement control, and breathing. Sessions are one-on-one and customized to each individual. Exercises are performed on the Pilates reformer or mat. Clinical Pilates are physiotherapist led and may be claimed under extended health care plans that cover physiotherapy.

What to Expect

During your first appointment, a physiotherapist trained in Clinical Pilates will discuss your injury or condition with you to learn more about your concerns and goals. An assessment will then be performed to investigate your movement patterns and determine your current level of mobility and strength. Based on this information, the physiotherapist will design a Pilates program incorporating exercises performed on the mat and reformer. This treatment will involve education on breathing, posture, and core activation. The therapist will also provide you with “homework” to help reinforce the exercises completed in clinic.

FAQs

What injuries can physiotherapy help?

Some examples of injuries that can benefit from physiotherapy are: low back pain, disc herniation, whiplash injuries, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, prenatal and postnatal care, Achilles tendinopathy, total hip or knee replacement rehab, sciatica, rotator cuff injuries, TMJ problems, plantar fasciitis, ACL sprains and reconstruction, running injuries, frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis, and sacroiliac joint pain (SI joint).

Can physiotherapy help with preventing injuries?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! People often seek out physiotherapy when they have an acute injury. However, physiotherapists also have the expertise to help in injury prevention and movement optimization. After a detailed physical assessment, your physiotherapist can customize an exercise program that helps optimize movement mechanics to allow you function more efficiently.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to come to physio?

You do not need a doctor’s referral to be seen by a physiotherapist. If you have extended health benefits, some companies require a physician’s note before a claim may be submitted.

How many sessions of physiotherapy will I need?

Every person’s injury is unique and will be assessed individually. Your physiotherapist will discuss your treatment plan during your first appointment and advise you on the recommended frequency of treatment. In some cases, this may be only 1 or 2 sessions, while for the management of more chronic or severe injuries, a longer schedule of treatment may be appropriate.

What should I wear to my first appointment?

Please bring comfortable clothes that you are able to move around in. If you have a shoulder injury or knee injury, clothing that allows visual examination of the area (tank top or shorts) is recommended. However, if you forget, we always have extras.

Are all of your physiotherapists registered?

Yes, they are. Physiotherapists are university educated and must pass written and practical competency exams before they may register with the College of Physiotherapists of British Columbia (CPTBC). To promote safe practice and evidence-based treatment, the CPTBC requires physiotherapists to complete competency exams every 5 years. Treatment from a registered physiotherapist may be submitted to extended health benefits plans that have physiotherapy coverage. For your convenience, our clinic provides direct billing to most major extended health plans. Click HERE for a list of the companies we can assist you with submitting claims to.

Do your physiotherapists treat WorkSafe BC claims?

Unfortunately, no. If you have been injured at work and have an active injured worker’s claim, you need to seek treatment from a clinic that has a contract with WorkSafe BC.

I noticed your physiotherapists do some needling including IMS and acupuncture. Can I use the acupuncture portion of my extended health plan when I come in?

Unfortunately, health insurance companies cover the service provider and not specifically the services itself. A registered physiotherapist will perform the needling technique and thus will fall under the physiotherapy portion of your extended health benefit. Please contact us for further information.
