Concussions and Physiotherapy

What is a concussion?
It is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), caused by either a blow to the head or a rapid acceleration/deceleration to the head. This can impact many domains including physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep.
Some common myths…
“You have to lose consciousness or hit your head for it to be a concussion”
- False: most concussions happen without a loss of consciousness and without a direct impact
“You need to rest in a dark room until there are no more symptoms after a concussion”
- False: Strict rest is no longer recommended after 1-2days; light, guided activity supports recovery
“concussion symptoms appear immediately”
- False: Symptoms may be immediate or delayed over hours to days
How does physiotherapy help?
Most concussion symptoms self resolve in 1-2 weeks (Need quote and verify) and can return gradually to work/activities.
Of those that don’t with that time frame, they will experience post concussion syndrome where the above symptoms persist for a longer duration where the brain still has challenges intregrating the information in world. Health care professional trained in concussion management can help treat concussion and facilitate return to activity.
This can include:
- An assessment discussing your symptoms and history
- Testing movement, balance, coordination and/or visual testing
- A rehabilitation plan based on your current limitations and goals
- Ongoing monitoring throughout your return to life/work/sport/school
When to See a Physiotherapist?
If you…
- Have recently sustained a concussion (sports, falls, accidents, etc.)
- Have ongoing/prolonged symptoms after a concussion (exceeding 10-14 days in adults)
- Are looking for active recovery options beyond rest
- Want additional guidance on return to school, work, sports, or daily activities
