We've been working for many years as physiotherapists and have now opened up our own clinic. We'd love to share our expertise and experience with you in our new facility!

Focus Physio + Wellness was born when a group of like-minded experts decided that they wanted to join together and pursue their passion for empowering people to lead fully active, functional, and pain-free lives.

BIOS

Ivan Soo

Physiotherapist

MScPT, BScKin, CGIMS

Ivan completed his physiotherapy training at Queens University (Ontario) after obtaining a degree in Human Kinetics from Simon Fraser University (BC). He has also completed post-graduate courses in a variety of manual therapy techniques, vestibular rehabilitation, and is certified in both acupuncture and Gunn IMS (intra-muscular stimulation). Ivan uses his manual and needling skills in combination with education and exercise prescription to assist clients in achieving their goals.

In his spare time Ivan enjoys running, playing volleyball, and spending time with his wife and daughter Keira. He is often found completing projects around his home…and the homes of his less handy friends and coworkers.

Aaron Vani

Physiotherapist

MScPT, BScKin, CGIMS

Aaron completed his physiotherapy degree at the University of Alberta and a Kinesiology degree from the University of Victoria. He has taken manual therapy courses and is licensed to perform acupuncture and IMS. This year Aaron has taken on a teaching assistant role for a Functional Dry Needling & Intramuscular Stimulation continuing education course. As most of his patients can attest to his joy of talking, teaching is a natural progression for him. Aaron’s approach is to use joint mobilization, dry needling, and biomechanical retraining (exercise) to help his clients lead more active, functional and pain-free lives.

Aaron is an active person and has played rugby at a varsity, national, and international level. He currently enjoys skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and going for runs with his wife, Catherine, and their son, Owen. His interests include photography and exploring the various coffee shops around the city. His favourite colour is plaid.

Catherine Vani

Physiotherapist

MScPT, BScKin

Catherine completed her physiotherapy degree at the University of Alberta and holds a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Victoria. She has also completed post-graduate courses on manual therapy and vestibular rehabilitation. Catherine believes in using a combination of manual therapy, exercise, and education.

Catherine enjoys spending time outdoors, is an avid recycler and is currently expecting her second baby boy. She can often be seen jogging on the Seawall with her son, Owen, and less enthusiastic husband, Aaron. Catherine will be continuing to see clients until her maternity leave, beginning in November 2016.

Jamie Sonego

Physiotherapist
MScPT, CAFCI

Jamie completed her Master of Science in Physical Therapy and her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Alberta. Since graduating, Jamie has been working at a private practice in Edmonton and has recently moved to Vancouver, joining our team. She has completed her Level 1 Manual Therapy as well as her medical acupuncture certification through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute. Jamie plans to continue to further her education in manual therapy, dry needling and a number of other courses. In her spare time, Jamie is a sports enthusiast and fitness instructor that enjoys a wide variety of sports especially squash, soccer and running. She enjoys treating people of all ages including children and is excited to be joining the Focus team of professionals.

Jonah Sese

Clinic Manager

Jonah completed her Medical Office Assistant Certificate at Vancouver Community College. She loves adventuring the city during all four seasons, trying new hikes in the summer and exploring the mountains snowboarding in the winter. To live a happy life Jonah believes in staying active, eating good food and traveling. She enjoys spending time with her two dogs, family and friends. If she won the lottery she would backpack around the world.

Brian Redillas

Registered Massage Therapist

Brian has experience treating clients with a range of health problems including MS, chronic pain syndromes, post-MVA related problems, sports-related injuries, muscle tightness, and nerve impingements caused by everyday wear and tear. He uses direct fascial techniques that can be used with light to deep pressure, along with passive stretching and Swedish massage.

The majority of his spare time is spent with his wife and young son. Learning more about wine, listening to records, watching his son’s crazy dance moves and looking for the highest quality “pain au chocolat” are among his favourite pastimes.

Corey Pettet

Registered Massage Therapist

Corey puts emphasis on a thorough assessment and believes that through deep and specific techniques that focus on the cause symptoms, recovery can be achieved in a shorter duration. He has worked with a wide variety of clients that range from office workers and nurses to amateur athletes and professional stunt workers. Corey has been able to successfully aid clients with chronic headaches, low back pain, muscular and postural imbalances, strains, sprains, tendinopathies, fibromyalgia and many more pathologies. His treatments are generally oil-free and include deep and superficial myofascial release, trigger point therapy, active and passive stretching, friction therapy and Graston Technique.

When he is not working, Corey enjoys reading and learning about nutrition and health, as well experimenting in the kitchen. He can often be found on the North Shore hiking trails, along Vancouver’s Seawall, or in the gym.

Marina Lagacé

Registered Massage Therapist

Marina is a graduate of The West Coast College of Massage Therapy in Victoria. Her treatments are unique to each individual, with focus on achieving greater balance and body awareness while incorporating a blend of Myofascial techniques, deep tissue work, joint play and range of motion techniques. She has a special interest in working with headaches, jaw dysfunction, digestive issues, scar tissue, chronic stress and anxiety, pregnancy and postural imbalances. She strives to leave her clients with a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

Marina has taken additional training in Indian Head Massage, Reiki, Aromatherapy, Visceral Manipulation, and Muscle Energy Technique (MET). She completed her Doula training in Victoria in 2015. Marina has been practicing yoga for 11 years.

Holding a BFA in Theatre, Marina is also a musician, actively writing and performing her own songs on guitar and ukulele. She has been singing since the cradle – literally! When she is not engaged with music, Marina will be found outdoors. She loves to cycle, hike, dance, swim, and generally revel in the glorious beauty of our coastal home.

Justin Carpenter

Kinesiologist

Justin has his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of British Columbia, is trained in Functional Capacity Evaluation, Functional Movement Screen and is certified in soft tissue release. He has over 6 years firsthand experience working with a variety of health professionals including physiotherapists, athletic therapists and occupational therapists. Being an integral player on a collaborative health care team, Justin has aided numerous clients who have sustained injuries during motor vehicle or work place accidents with their recoveries in a timely manner. Justin uses a variety of unique assessment techniques to find the underlying dysfunction before designing an individualized program. He is a strong advocate for education and self-empowerment, and takes time to teach specific principles for continuing safe and effective self-care.

In his spare time Justin embraces any opportunity to get involved with sports, especially football. Justin lives for football and enjoys heated discussions involving the Philadelphia Eagles or his fantasy roster. You may also find Justin playing some defensive end in Slocan.

Kelly Wanless

Kinesiologist

Kelly graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2012 with a degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences. Her interest in biomechanics, movement dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalances, and exercise led her to work with individuals recovering from accident and injury. Kelly also has experience working with patients with a cancer diagnosis, using evidence-based exercise prescriptions before, during & after treatment and surgeries to reduce treatment side effects. She is passionate about treating the body as a whole and working with her patients to optimize function and mobility. Her treatment focus is on client empowerment through education, body awareness and rehabilitative exercises, helping clients to get back to living full and active lives. Kelly enjoys working with the chronic disease populations and has a special interest in the shoulder, lumbar spine, and hip.

When not at the clinic, Kelly likes to stay active inside the gym and out among the trees. She enjoys live music (but can’t hold a tune), likes to cook (although is unable to identify paprika from cayenne pepper) and loves to eat even more.


Aviya Kones

Medical Office Assistant

Aviya graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies. Since then she has taken time to travel and live in other regions of the world. Aviya is back at school with the hopes of becoming an Occupational Therapist. She spends most of her time studying, working and volunteering. She loves to take advantage of Vancouver’s forest trails by hiking or running.

Courtney Wong

Medical Office Assistant

Courtney is currently pursuing a Communications degree at Simon Fraser University. When she is not studying or working she loves to explore the outdoors with her dog, spend time with
family & friends and bake healthy treats! She enjoys staying active in a variety of sports including Ultimate Frisbee in which she has had the opportunity to represent B.C.
Courtney attributes her happiness to always keeping a smile on her face and is excited to join the Focus Physio + Wellness team.
